The convoy covered a mile long stretch of Highway 1, the modern U.S.
replacement for the winding dirt road between Hue and Quang Tri nick-
named La Rue San Joie (Street without Joy) by French soldiers.
Most of the bodies in the convoy are skeletons now. Much of the clothing
has also rotted in the jungle sun and rain. But you can still make out part of
a uniform there; a little girl’s dress there, an old man’s pajama here.
Most of the trucks were olive painted army vehicles, but the motorbikes and
bicycles mainly carried civilians. Many of the soldiers in the army trucks
were apparently wounded and could not fght or run when attacked.
In one truck, half of the 10 bodies had traced of bandages and slings. In
another, there were fve stretchers with bodies lying on each of them.
All the vehicles and bodies had been looted - either by attacking North
Vietnamese troops or by feeing South Vietnamese. Trucks were open and
goods scattered all over the road, pockets of the few surviving pairs of
pants turned inside out.
There wasn’t much you could do. Just close your eyes and turn your back
and walk away. Try to forget what you saw, the convoy of death, the truck-
load of death. But it’d be a long time before you’d you be able to get it out
of your mind.
